HeiferDust is made to be used, not studied. Shake a little on like salt and pepper, use a more generous amount as a rub, or taste it and let your imagination decide where it belongs. From steak and seafood to eggs, vegetables and popcorn, there really isn’t one right way to use HeiferDust.
Put Some HeiferDust On It.
HeiferDust is a family seasoning brand with roots going back to the early 1920s. Today we make three versatile blends: All Purpose, Blackened and Creole Butter. They can be used for everyday seasoning, grilling, blackening, baking, sautéing or as a rub.
HeiferDust is pronounced “heifer dust.” A heifer is a young female cow. People who aren’t around cattle sometimes pronounce the name differently or spell it “Heffer Dust” after hearing it. Our brand is spelled HeiferDust — Heifer + Dust — and the name comes from an expression our Paw Paw used around his grandchildren.
Yes. That’s how we use HeiferDust most of the time. All Purpose can be shaken on food much like salt and pepper, while Blackened and Creole Butter let you add different flavors. How much you use depends on your own taste buds. Start with a little, taste your food and add more when you want it.
A normal serving size for nutritional purposes is 1/4 teaspoon, but cooking is different. Use HeiferDust to taste just like you would salt and pepper. Some foods only need a light shake, while steak, other meats and vegetables can take a more generous amount.
HeiferDust All Purpose contains more sodium than our Blackened blend, so with All Purpose we usually start with a little and add more if needed.
Absolutely. Give steak, pork, chicken, fish or vegetables a more generous coating before grilling, smoking, baking or roasting. If you only want a little extra flavor, shake it on more lightly. HeiferDust works either way.
Not at all. That’s part of what makes HeiferDust so versatile. Shake it on something you already cook and see what your taste buds tell you. Some of our favorite uses were discovered simply because somebody tried HeiferDust on a food we had never thought about before.
Almost anything. All Purpose is our everyday seasoning and can be used much like salt and pepper. We use it on avocado, scrambled eggs, deviled eggs, steak, salmon, vegetables, soups, stews and gravy. It is also good on popcorn, celery and even in a Bloody Mary.
The paprika in the blend makes it especially good on foods like deviled eggs. The point is to experiment. If you already like the food, there’s a good chance you’ll find a way to use HeiferDust on it.
No. HeiferDust Blackened has plenty of ground pepper flavor, but it isn’t hot. It has a light hint of lemon and isn’t salty. That makes it good on blackened steak, pork chops, fish, seafood and plenty of everyday foods.
In our family, it is even a favorite on scrambled eggs.
Not at all. You can use HeiferDust Blackened just like an everyday seasoning. Shake a little on eggs, meat, fish or vegetables, or give food a more generous coating when you’re actually blackening steak, chops, shrimp or fish.
Creole Butter has a buttery flavor with light garlic and a hint of lemon. It is great on steak, corn on the cob, popcorn, shrimp, fish and other seafood. It also works especially well on vegetables including okra, zucchini, squash and asparagus.
Absolutely. Creole Butter makes a great steak rub. Give the steak a generous coating before cooking, or use a lighter shake when you just want to add buttery, garlic and lemon flavor.
We didn’t originally think of Creole Butter as a steak rub until our butcher tried it and began recommending it to his customers. That’s a good example of what HeiferDust is all about: try it and let your taste buds decide.
Taste it. Put a little HeiferDust in the palm of your hand and give it a try. Let your taste buds and imagination tell you where you want to use it. A little may be all you want on one food, while another can take a generous coating.
There really isn’t a wrong way to use HeiferDust. Season to your own taste.
Try HeiferDust on scrambled eggs, deviled eggs, avocado, popcorn, corn on the cob, celery, okra, zucchini, squash, asparagus, French fries or potatoes. All Purpose can even add flavor to soups, stews, gravy and a Bloody Mary.
Those are only ideas. Some of the best uses come from trying it on something you already enjoy.
If you want one seasoning that can sit beside your salt and pepper and go on almost anything, start with All Purpose. If you like ground pepper flavor with a light hint of lemon and less salt, try Blackened. If buttery flavor, light garlic and lemon sound good to you, try Creole Butter.
Or try all three and let your taste buds decide.
You don’t need a special recipe. Pick a seasoning, put it on something you already like and start there.
